7 people, including 2 children, sickened by carbon monoxide poisoning in Valley Stream, police say

Seven people, including two children, were hospitalized after they suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in their Valley Stream home Sunday, Nassau police said.
First responders, including police medics and Valley Stream firefighters, were alerted to a report of an unresponsive woman at a Henrietta Street residence about 8:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they found two women, age 22 and 47, overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning, police said.
Authorities determined that there were elevated carbon monoxide levels in the home, police said.
The two women and five other occupants, age 2, 10, 22, 28 and 30, were transported to a hospital for treatment, police said. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill without warning, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Many basic household items, including gas- and oil-burning furnaces, portable generators and charcoal grills produce the poisonous gas, the CDC said.
The best form of prevention, experts say, is to install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
