A body recovered from the water Monday off Jones Beach near the Central Mall concession area has been identified as that of Old Field surfer Zachary Gottfried, New York State Park Police said.
Gottfried, 31, an avid surfer and kiteboarder, disappeared Thursday off Gilgo State Park while surfing in high-surf conditions with another man, who was identified as his business manager, according to a news release Tuesday.
Teams from the State Park Police, U.S. Coast Guard, Long Beach police, Nassau and Suffolk County police and Town of Babylon Public Safety searched for Gottfried for five days.
The search included helicopters and overnight beach patrols, police said.
Police said Gottfried disappeared in 10-foot surf, in waters about a quarter-mile east of the sand-road entrance to Gilgo State Park.
The second surfer was able to leave the water Thursday.
