New York City officials charged three teens Monday following an early morning incident on Sunday that left a city officer critically injured while chasing the suspected car thieves, New York City police said.

The trio - Mario Koruni, Sefer Mujo and Tiku Qoko, all 18 and from Brooklyn - were charged Monday with felony assault and possession of stolen property in connection to an early-morning chase that left Officer Carlos Olmedo with a serious brain injury, police said.

Olmedo, 31, underwent surgery on Sunday following the 1 a.m. collision in which he was hit by a motorcycle during a foot chase in Bensonhurst. Officials described his condition as "grave" and unchanged Monday.

Olmedo was at 20th Avenue and 84th Street when he and his partner spotted a suspected stolen car with a group of men inside, authorities said. As Olmedo started to chase the suspects, he ran into the street and was hit by a motorcyclist.

Police said the assault charges were related to the motorcycle collision. The motorcyclist was not connected to the stolen car and was not charged.
