Suffolk man charged in hit-and-run that killed bicyclist, police say
A Coram man was arrested and charged Monday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in the hamlet earlier this month, Suffolk police said.
David Hernandez, 29, of Norfleet Lane, was charged Monday with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to police.
His arraignment Monday at First District Court in Central Islip was adjourned until May 18, according to court records. Hernandez was placed on supervised release.
Police said the hit-and-run occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on April 6 when Edward White, 54, of Coram, was struck by a vehicle, believed to be a light-colored SUV, while biking east on the shoulder in front of 50 Middle Country Rd.
The driver of the SUV, who authorities identified as Hernandez, fled after striking White, throwing him into the roadway, police said. White was then struck by a second vehicle, a 2015 Honda CR-V, authorities said.
The 32-year-old male driver of the Honda remained at the crash scene.
White was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.
