Cops: Thieves nab cash, collectibles at Melville show
Thieves stole more than $100,000 in cash, collectible coins and gold bars Sunday during a Melville collectibles show, Suffolk police said.
The items were stolen during the Melville Coin, Stamp and Collectible Show at 585 Broadhallow Rd., according to police. Two of the suspects, a man and a woman, fled the scene with the stolen goods and were last seen being driven away by third suspect in a black SUV, possibly a Nissan Rogue, police said.
At 2 p.m., according to police, a vendor, who was not identified, left a box containing cash, collectible coins and gold bars with a male acquaintance, police said. The acquaintance was then distracted by the female suspect who pulled him aside. Meanwhile, the male suspect approached the table, grabbed the box, and both he and the woman fled north on Broadhollow Road to the waiting SUV, police said.
The Melville Coin, Stamp and Collectibles Show happens every second and fourth Sunday of the month. The event has taken place at the same Broadhollow Road location for more than five decades, according to the show's website.
Police ask anyone with information to call detectives at 631-854-8252 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. Calls will be confidential.
