Nassau SPCA offers $5,000 reward in dog’s starvation death

After a “severely emaciated dog” was dropped off Thursday by an unknown person at an Inwood animal hospital, a $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for starving it to death, according to the Nassau County district attorney’s office.

The terrier-pit bull mix, “found to be severely emaciated and too weak to hold her head up,” was left about 3 p.m. at the Five Towns Animal Hospital, 157 Sheridan Blvd., according to the district attorney’s office.

Staffers brought the dog inside on a stretcher and “found her to be about 20 pounds underweight with open sores on her back,” the office said in a news release.

The dog was taken to New York Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in Farmingdale but later died from kidney failure, the release said.

“This innocent animal suffered and ultimately died a painful death because of the heartless neglect of her owner,” said District Attorney Madeline Singas.

She expressed gratitude to the county’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for offering the reward, saying, “We will not tolerate animal cruelty and neglect, and I’m hopeful that the public will help us get justice for Terry,” which is the name her investigators gave the dog.

The district attorney’s office also released a video of the person leaving the dog outside the shelter.
