Police shoot, injure knife-wielding man

Police shot and wounded a man who was wielding two kitchen knives in front of his apartment in the Melrose section of the Bronx, police said Saturday.

With knives raised, the man, 33, advanced toward two plainclothes officers shortly after 9 p.m. Friday after they yelled "Police! Drop the knife!" in English and in Spanish, police said.

One officer opened fire, hitting the suspect, police said. The man kept coming toward the officers, ignoring another command to drop the knives, and the same officer fired and struck him a second time, police said.

With bullet wounds to his arm and his torso, the man fell to the ground and dropped the knives, police sources said.

The suspect, whom police had not yet identified, was transported to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where he was in stable condition Saturday.

As of Saturday evening, he had not been charged.

The shooting occurred after uniformed and plainclothes police responded to a 911 call reporting that a man at the Monsignor E. Roberts Moore public housing development, armed with knives, was banging on an upstairs neighbor's door following a dispute, police said.

When police arrived, the suspect was not at the neighbor's door. Two plainclothes officers found him when they went downstairs to the man's apartment, police said.

Police recovered two knives, one with a 6-inch blade and one with a 7-inch blade.
