A Long Island man is facing attempted murder and burglary charges after allegedly breaking into the home of his ex-girlfriend last month and stabbing her adult son multiple times, prosecutors said.
Robert Schreiber, 42, of Patchogue, pleaded not guilty at an arraignment before State Supreme Court Justice John Collins Thursday and was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail or $1 million bond, court records show.
Prosecutors said Schreiber, whose girlfriend ended their relationship April 17 and locked him out of her home, entered the residence on Marvin Street through a window at 8 a.m. the next day while everyone inside was sleeping. He kicked in the 22-year-old son’s door and stabbed him seven times in the head, neck and shoulder, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The victim’s family members intervened and called 911, allowing the injured son to escape down the stairs of the home, prosecutors said. Suffolk police located the son nearby and transported him to NYU Langone Hospital in Patchogue, where he was treated for his stab wounds.
Schreiber, who prosecutors said was still in possession of the knife when officers arrived at the scene, was initially charged with felony assault, and misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon. He has been held at the Suffolk County jail since the April 18 incident, court records show.
Schreiber is now facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the upgraded charges at trial. His retained attorney, Ira Weissman, of Central Islip, could not be immediately reached for comment.
Schreiber is due back in court May 28, records show.
