Woman drove drunk with kids in East Hampton, police say
A mother with two children in her vehicle was charged with driving while drunk and resisting arrest Wednesday night, East Hampton Town police said.
Julia Moffett, 47, was released on a $5,000 cash bail after arraignment Thursday on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated, harassment and resisting arrest, police said. Moffett is the daughter of Toby Moffett, a former congressman from Connecticut.
She had been stopped Wednesday night on the portion of Route 27 known as Pantigo Road in East Hampton, police said.
Details on what occurred were not immediately available from police Friday night, but Moffett’s attorney, Daniel Rodgers of Southampton, said there was “little evidence” his client was drunk.
Moffett, a U.S. citizen who lives in Kenya, was stopped for a vehicle-related violation, Rodgers said, and after police said her breath smelled of alcohol, she took a breath test and was arrested. Results of an alcohol blood test are pending, he said.
Rodgers said he did not believe his client was drunk.
The attorney confirmed his client was accused of trying to kick officers as they tried to put her into a police car. “If you’re an innocent person ... and the police are taking you away in handcuffs, away from your children,” Rodgers said, “I’d be pretty upset too.”
