Homicide detectives think they know the identity of a man shot dead Friday night in his Elmont apartment, but were waiting for his family to identify him Sunday at the medical examiner's office, a Nassau police spokesman said.

Fifth Precinct officers, responding to a call of gunshots fired, found the 27-year-old victim at about 9:30 p.m. at his Jacob Street first-floor rental, said the department spokesman, Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

Repalone said witnesses told officers that a dark-colored sedan fled the crime scene south on Jacob.

Police are looking for suspects and a motive. Anyone with information can call the department's Crime Stoppers hotline: 800-244-TIPS.

There were no signs of forced entry into the home, which the victim had rented since August, Repalone said.

His family is from Queens.
