A popular Nassau County bagel shop and restaurant was closed to business on Wednesday and listed on an auction website.

Gabby's Gourmet Bagelatessen, on Jericho Turnpike in the Woodbury Town Plaza, posted several signs in its windows Wednesday, saying: "Temporarily closed during renovations."

That left regular customers confused and disappointed. Several stopped to peer in the windows, where menu signs were still visible among tables and chairs.

Onsy Elshamy, 77, of Bethpage, and Magdy Dos, 70, of Islip Terrace, said they had been going to Gabby's after church at nearby St. Abraam Coptic Orthodox Church for years.

"We come every week," Dos said, adding they enjoyed the food, atmosphere and sidewalk seating.

"We're disappointed; now we have to go somewhere else," Elshamy said.

The store was listed on auction website American Auctions, Liquidations, Appraisals, Inc., which stated, "All top of the line equipment and fixtures must be sold to the bare walls regardless of price."

The description also said a new tenant is moving in.

The auction will take place Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at the bagel shop, according to the website.

Gabby's, which opened in 2000, lists a wide range of options for breakfast, lunch and early dinners, including soup, salads, sandwiches and wraps on its website, which Wednesday made no mention of the closing.

Representatives of Gabby’s Gourmet Bagelatessen did not respond for comment.
