The eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were reopened between exits 46 and 48 in Plainview about noon on Thursday after two tractor trailers collided, causing a fuel spill, Nassau police said.

The crash sent traffic onto the LIE's service road for about nine hours Thursday, backing up the expressway and causing delays on major east-west thoroughfares, including Old Country Road and Jericho Turpike, police and witness reported.

At 3:20 a.m., a 57-year-old man driving a 2000 tractor trailer was driving eastbound when he collided with a parked 2014 tractor trailer, operated by a 50-year-old man, near exit 48. The 2000 tractor trailer then hit the center median, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The Department of Transportation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the area to clean the spill.

The lanes were reopened about noon, police said.

Photos from the scene show a badly damaged cab of a tractor trailer that appears to be jackknifed.
