One person was injured in a Farmingdale car garage fire that had 10 fire departments responding Tuesday night, authorities said.
The fire started about 7:07 p.m. in a car garage on Columbia Avenue, Nassau police said.
The victim was repairing a car when the gas tank fell from its mount, police said. The fuel spilled onto the floor, where a hot, electric drop light set the gas ablaze, police said.
The victim tried to stamp out the flames and suffered some burns to his leg, police said.
He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for nonlife-threatening second-degree burns, said First Assistant Chief Frank Romano. The man's identity was not released.
Police said arson detectives were investigating.
The blaze destroyed two cars and all the equipment and supplies stored in the garage, Romano said.
About 80 firefighters battled the blaze, which was challenging to put out because it was close to older homes, Romano said. Also, narrow streets made it hard for engines to reach the scene quickly and the confined space limited access to the fire, he said.
By 8:15 p.m., firefighters had beaten back the main part of the fire, and it was declared under control at 8:59 p.m., the fire department said.
