1 injured, 4 homeless after Woodmere fire
Four people are homeless after a fire Friday night in a two-story, two-family home on Prospect Avenue in Woodmere.
A 61-year-old man was found unconscious on the second floor by firefighters and sustained second-degree burns to his hands, neck and face, Nassau County police said in a news release.
The victim also showed signs of smoke inhalation and was brought to a hospital by the Woodmere fire department. His name was not released.
Three other people - two adults and a child living on the first floor - were not hurt in the fire.
The house is not livable at this point, said Sam Kille, director of public relations The American Red Cross in Nassau County, which gave the family money for clothes and food.
They are staying with friends.
Four fire departments - Woodmere, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Inwood and Valley Stream - responded to the two-story, two-family home on Prospect Avenue at 7:10 p.m. Friday. Eighteen trucks and 65 firefighters put out the blaze.
Police said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in origin but the investigation was ongoing.
