The puppy heist at The Pet Company went like this, the saleswoman said: On Friday night, just before closing at the Massapequa store, two men stayed up front and interrogated her about a parrot that wasn't even for sale, while three more men and a woman, all in puffy winter parkas, went to the kennel in back.

The kennel was empty after they left a few minutes later, "all sort of huddled together."

A $1,400 mix between a cocker spaniel and a cavalier King Charles spaniel called a cockalier and a $1,235 Chinese crested were missing.

The puppies were both between 10 and 12 weeks old, weighed about 3 pounds each, and were only slightly bigger than a man's hand. The Chinese crested was white with beige markings; the cockalier had outsize floppy ears and bore a passing resemblance to a panda bear, said the sales clerk, Valerie Bernal, 18.

"They had little furry stuffed animals that they liked to play with and they loved to chew on Christmas socks, the big ones that you hang," she said.

Nassau police are investigating the dognapping and ask that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.

Bernal said the puppies were on a special diet and might require medicine. She asked that the alleged thieves "think not just of themselves but of the well-being of the puppies."
