2nd suspect arrested in credit-card skimming

Police said they have made a second arrest in a credit card scam in which a waitress at a Westbury Houlihan's restaurant was arrested in May.

Smith is scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Smith and Gabriella Melendez were behind the credit card skimming operation that resulted in more than $3,100 in fraudulent purchases.

Melendez, 24, of 79 Stowe Ave., Baldwin, was arrested May 14 and also charged with third-degree grand larceny, two counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and two counts each of first-degree and second-degree identity theft.

Court records indicate Melendez, who is being represented by a court-appointed attorney, was released on $7,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 12.

Police said Melendez, working as a waitress at the Houlihan's, skimmed credit card numbers from customers and then, along with Smith, used them to make purchases at stores throughout Nassau.
