3 arrested in Roslyn Heights burglary

Three men, two of them from New Jersey, were arrested Thursday after a burglary at a communications store in Roslyn Heights.

The suspects were in two separate vehicles and one of the suspects led police on a brief pursuit, injuring two state police troopers in the process, Nassau County police said.

Arrested were John Coello, 22, of 615 37th St., Apt. 1, Union City, N.J., Duane Holmes, 41, of 8127 Bergenline Ave., North Bergen, N.J., and Christopher Thomas, 26, of 21109 Maple St., Matteson, Ill. Coello was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, third-degree burglary and reckless driving. Holmes and Thomas were charged with third-degree burglary.

Police said the trio were in possession of stolen property they had taken during a burglary at about 1:15 a.m. at Jet Communications on Mineola Avenue in Roslyn Heights.

Police said officers attempted to stop Coello after he was observed on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore driving a car with stolen plates, but said Coello tried to flee -- leading to a pursuit. During that chase, police said Coello rammed a State Police car, injuring two troopers. Police eventually were able to stop Coello, arresting him.

Those troopers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries and were treated and released, police said.

Meanwhile, police said, Thomas and Holmes, who were driving on Sunrise in a separate car near Coello's, fled on westbound Sunrise Highway, but were later stopped by police in Rockville Centre.

Police said they surrendered without incident.

It was not immediately clear what was taken in the burglary -- or if the incident was looting related to superstorm Sandy.

Police said all three men will be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
