A driver who struck a tree on the south service road of the Long Island Expressway in Roslyn Heights Monday is in critical condition, Nassau police said.
The LIE service road between Searingtown Road and Willis Avenue was temporarily closed during the investigation and is now reopened, police said.
Third Squad detectives were investigating the 11:45 a.m. crash that closed the service road. The male driver, 33, was behind the wheel of a 2003 Chevrolet going east on the service road near Brower’s Lane.
The driver lost control, struck a curb and then a tree, police said.
“Third Precinct police along with the Emergency Services Unit responded and removed the driver who was pinned in the auto,” police said in a news release.
The driver was taken to a hospital and treated for severe chest and back injuries. He is critical condition, police said.
The vehicle was impounded for a brake and safety check; police said there is no apparent criminality.
