For Giants fan Alec Wishney, anticipation will be mounting Sunday as the hours to the Super Bowl kickoff count down.
But Wishney and other members of Adelphi University's Kappa Sigma fraternity have another reason to root: They'll be able to eat.
Fifty members of the fraternity plan to fast from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday to collect food and money for Island Harvest, an anti-hunger organization.
Kenny Ranert, 22, a senior majoring in business and marketing, said the fast will be well worth it.
"A lot people wake up every morning thinking about how they're going to feed their kids and themselves," he said.
On Saturday, the fraternity will sponsor Superhunger Fest from 2 to 4 p.m. at Campbell Lounge on the Adelphi campus, featuring games and music. Those attending are asked to donate $3 and a nonperishable food item. Fraternity members are also collecting food donations from residents around Adelphi.
The goal is to beat the $3,500 and 600 pounds of food Kappa Sigma raised last year, said Wishney, 21, a senior studying accounting.
Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive of Island Harvest, applauded the effort. "The fact that . . . they're interested in learning about others and helping others is just tremendous."
