Three juveniles were in custody, being questioned in connection with a small fire at an elementary school playground early Thursday in Merrick, Nassau County police said.

The fire at the Roland A. Chatterton School on Smith Street and Merrick Avenue was reported at 1:20 a.m., police said.

Police said responders arrived to find playground equipment on fire, and volunteers from the Merrick Fire Department soon extinguished it. It was not clear what type of equipment was involved and the extent of the damage.

Police said three juveniles were taken into custody nearby, but could not immediately provide an age or sex.

The Chatterton school serves students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Arson Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances of the fire.
