Nassau police Monday night identified a man they said died six days after being critically injured in a Uniondale crash as Alex Jose Banegas Figueroa, 35, of Plainview.

Police said Figueroa was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m. Friday at Nassau University Medical Center.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 24, Figueroa had been a passenger in a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee when it overturned on Jerusalem Avenue, near Liberty Street, in Uniondale and struck a pole. Police officers pulled him from the wreck and he was taken to the hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

"A 45-year-old male who was also an occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident was located walking nearby and transported to a nearby hospital for assessment and treatment," the police said in a Feb. 24 news release. "The investigation is ongoing."
