Another guilty plea in slaying of Albany student from LI
A second man has pleaded guilty in an Albany courtroom in connection with the killing of Wantagh college student Richard Bailey in October 2008, according to a published report.
Ricardo Caldwell, 19, of Schenectady, pleaded guilty Thursday and agreed to testify against the sole defendant remaining in the case, De Von Callicut, 19, of Rensselaer, the Albany Times-Union Web site said.
Callicut is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Bailey on an Albany street on Oct. 20, 2008. If convicted, Callicut faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Last month, King Jamell Modest, 17, of Albany, pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted robbery.
Bailey, 22, a sociology and criminal justice major at Albany State University, was walking to his off-campus apartment when three men attempted to rob him, Albany prosecutors have said. He was shot once in the head and died the following day at an Albany hospital.
Bailey, who hoped to follow the footsteps of his father, James, a retired New York City police officer, had taken the city police exam on Oct. 20 before returning to Albany.
James Bailey and his wife, Lisa, could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
Caldwell is expected to be sentenced in May to 12 years in prison and five years' post-release supervision, the Times-Union Web site said. It was not clear what charge Caldwell pleaded guilty to.
Modest is scheduled to be sentenced March 26 to 10 years in prison and 5 years' supervised probation, Albany County officials said.
