Wantagh Park was closed and evacuated for more than five hours Friday following a report of a potentially suicidal man sitting in a parked car, Nassau police said.

The man, who had a firearm, surrendered without any shots fired or injuries to anyone, police said. He was taken to a hospital for mental evaluation.

The incident began about 4:25 p.m. when a 911 call was received that there was a mentally disturbed person in the park, police said. Seventh Precinct officers, the Emergency Services Unit, the Electronics Squad, the Bureau of Special Operations, and police hostage negotiators responded, cleared the area and made contact with the man, police said.

After several hours of discussion with him, the man, whose name was not released by police, surrendered himself.

No information was released by police concerning any possible charges.
