Nassau County police charged a North Massapequa man with assault on Wednesday after he allegedly injured multiple officers during his arrest, the department said.

Officers responded to a residence on Mohawk Drive in North Massapequa around 9:25 a.m. for a report of a man causing a disturbance, Nassau police said in a news release.

When officers encountered Stephen Reill, 24, at the scene, police said the man became increasingly irate and "refused to comply" with their "verbal commands." A physical altercation commenced, and officers sustained injuries as they arrested Reill, who police said was "violent and combative" in the release.

Three police officers were sent to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, police said. Reill was also transported to a hospital for evaluation following his arrest.

Police charged Reill with three counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

He pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead and released with nonmonetary conditions, according to court records.
