A man was seriously injured while illegally riding an ATV on a street in Franklin Square on Wednesday morning, Nassau police said.

According to police, the 58-year-old man was riding an all-terrain vehicle on Third Avenue near Sheila Court. He suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which Fifth Squad detectives are investigating, police said.

It is illegal to operate an ATV on Nassau County roadways, and the police maintain a "zero-tolerance approach" toward their operation, officials said in a news release.
