Authorities await autopsy in baby's death
The death of a 6-month-old boy in Garden City remained under investigation Saturday as authorities awaited the results of an autopsy, said John Byrne, a spokesman for the Nassau County district attorney's office.
The baby's mother took the child to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola on Thursday because of an unknown illness. The baby was pronounced dead by hospital staff Friday at 2:06 a.m., Nassau County police said.
Police said Friday that they were investigating the death.
Garden City Mayor Donald T. Brudie said the investigation into the child's death was routine and said hospital personnel are obligated to report such a death to authorities.
The cause of death is pending a medical examiner's report, officials said.
