An autopsy conducted on a dead baby discovered last week on the conveyor belt of a Lawrence sanitation facility has determined that the child was born deceased and was female, the Nassau County medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

Fourth Squad detectives are concerned about the physical and mental well-being of the birth mother and are requesting that anyone with information regarding her identity contact them at 516-573-6553.

No further details were immediately available.

Police received a call at about 2:21 p.m. Oct. 22 from the facility, Sanitary District 1 at 2 Bay Blvd., reporting what police said was a "deceased fetus."

A worker at the time identified the baby as a boy, and said the baby was not breathing and still had the umbilical cord and placenta attached, an official said.

A worker at the facility said another worker had found the baby inside a bag on a conveyor belt in a recycling area of the plant.
