Baldwin names street after 9/11 victim

They named a street for Terence Manning in his hometown of Baldwin on Saturday, but friends and family would rather have had him around instead.

"I miss him," said his father, Philip, during a short, emotional speech about his son, who was 36 when he died at the World Trade Center on 9/11 along with nearly 500 other Long Islanders.

Hempstead Town officials, including Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilman Anthony Santino, Town Clerk Mark Bonilla and Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin, performed the dedication ceremony near Philip's house, where his son grew up and was married, on Silver Lake Place. That street now bears Terence's name on its eastern corner, at Lakeside Drive.

"The loss of Terence Manning was one that was felt by many, especially here in Baldwin," Murray said. "It is an honor to be able to remember his life today."

Terence, who with his wife and children was living in Point Lookout, had recently taken a job as a computer consultant with a Manhattan firm and was attending a conference at the north tower's Windows on the World complex the morning of 9/11.

Nearly three dozen people, mostly family and friends, were on hand for the ceremony.

Among them were Terence's wife, Megan, and their two daughters, Mairead and Trinity, now 12 and 10, respectively; and Terence's brother, Sean. The girls, standing next to the supervisor, solemnly unveiled the street sign, pulling a yellow cord to remove its cover.

Terence's mother, Gertrude, died in 2004.
