For almost two years, an Elmont appliance salesman pocketed cash purchases while charging them to bank credit cards on file at the Baldwin store where he worked, police said Friday.

And between Jan. 1, 2006, and Nov. 30, 2007, Nassau County police said Mark Silverstein, 48, of Oakley Avenue, stole more than $345,000.

Following an investigation by Crimes Against Property Squad detectives and the Secret Service, police arrested Silverstein Thursday on charges of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree falsifying business records and first-degree defraud. He was scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Silverstein was a salesman at Malkin-Rifkin Appliances on Grand Avenue in Baldwin and stole money from cash sales.

He then charged those purchases to what police called "random GE Money Bank credit cards" on file in the store.

A spokesman for the Long Island regional office of the Secret Service said it began the investigation in 2008 after the store owner notified the agency of possible improprieties.

Following its investigation, the Secret Service then contacted the Crimes Against Property Squad.
