The basement of a Seaford home was damaged Saturday afternoon after a table there caught on fire, Nassau County police said.

The couple who live at the Mansfield Drive home, a 78-year-old man and his 79-year-old wife, went to a hospital with minor injuries and were released.

Police don't believe the origin of the fire is suspicious, and a police spokesman said investigators don't yet know why the fire started.

The fire happened at about 3 p.m. The man smelled smoke, went downstairs, found the burning table and emerged with a burn on the top of his head.

His wife had shortness of breath.

Police did not have more details.
