A Bay Shore man was arraigned Sunday on charges that he robbed a woman in Freeport the night before.

James Marshall, 19, approached a 35-year-old woman about 9:40 p.m. Saturday as she was walking west on Smith Street, and attempted to take her pocketbook, Nassau police said.

The two scuffled as the woman tried to hold on to her purse, but once she saw the suspect had a handgun in his left hand she stopped fighting for her purse, which contained an undisclosed amount of money and a cellphone, police said.

First Squad detectives said Marshall was located by Freeport police officers nearly half an hour later near 250 S. Main St., with the woman's cellphone still in his possession.

He was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday and pleaded not-guilty Sunday to charges of first- and second-degree robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon at First District Court in Hempstead.
