Pest control workers began treating The Community Chest building in Port Washington for bedbugs last week, said Julie Meer Harnick, the organization's executive director.
The building, at 382 Main St., across the street from the town dock, is occupied by organizations including Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington, Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County Inc., and The Twin Pines of Port Washington Community Food Cooperative & Charitable Thrift Shop.
During a regular pest-control inspection May 17, a dog found evidence of bedbugs in three locations, Harnick said. There were no complaints of people being bitten by bugs, she said.
Two offices were treated the next day and passed a follow-up inspection. Treatment at an unoccupied space is continuing, Harnick said Wednesday.
The problem of bedbugs has prompted Nassau County to form a bedbug task force. For more information, visit nassaucountyny.gov/bedbugs.
