Bicyclist killed in Wantagh crash, police say

A Bellmore man riding his bicycle across Sunrise Highway in Wantagh was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday, police said Sunday.
According to Nassau Homicide Squad detectives, the victim, 51, was riding his bicycle at 8:50 p.m. and was trying to cross Sunrise Highway from south to north just west of Old Mill Road. After crossing the median, the man -- who has not been identified by police -- entered the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway and was struck by a 2000 Dodge Caravan being driven by a man, 50.
Police said the bicyclist suffered multiple injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Also injured was the 56-year-old wife of the driver, who suffered minor glass-related injuries and traumatic stress, police said. She was taken to a hospital to be treated and evaluated.
The driver and his wife were not identified by police. The accident is considered noncriminal, police said.

The time of the accident was about 8:50 p.m. Saturday night. Previous versions of the story gave an incorrect time.
