The boy from the Town of Oyster Bay who went on to be a Big Shot and inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame might get part of a highway named after him.
A bill in the State Legislature would name part of state Route 107 in the Town of Oyster Bay "Billy Joel Boulevard" for the prolific singer-songwriter and Long Island philanthropist -- the stretch of South Broadway from East John Street to West Old Country Road. It is sponsored by state Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) and Assemb. Michael Montesano (R-Glen Head)
The legislature is currently focusing local bills, including naming roads, bridges and parks for local celebrities.
The bill currently lacks a sponsor from the Democratic majority in the Assembly, which is usually necessary for passage. But the measure could get a little help from Democratic Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a friend and biker pal of Hicksville native Joel.
