The North Hempstead Town Board agreed Tuesday night to hold a public hearing July 12 on a proposal to bring alternate side parking regulations to a residential Port Washington neighborhood where train commuters park.

Tensions between residents of the Eastern Crest area just north of the Long Island Rail Road station and commuters who leave their cars in front of those homes have grown recently.

In response to homeowners' requests, North Hempstead Councilman Fred Pollack proposed Tuesday night at a Town Board meeting that parking be prohibited from 10:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2 p.m. during weekdays on alternate sides of the street.

The board set the public hearing on the ordinance, which would affect Jeannette and Annette drives and Linda and Evelyn roads, for its next regular board meeting.

The board Tuesday night also defeated a previous alternate side parking proposal that would have covered only two of those streets, because some residents believed commuters would then move to the others.
