The body of a male was found inside a vehicle Thursday afternoon after rescuers pulled it from the water near Cow Meadow Park in Freeport, the village’s mayor said.
The name, age and hometown of the deceased was not immediately available.
Two joggers saw a vehicle driving in circles on park grass at 1:30 p.m., about 80 feet from the water, Mayor Robert Kennedy said.
“They shortly then noticed that it made a turn went over … and directly into the water,” Kennedy said. The joggers called then police, he said.
Locating the vehicle took an hour as the tide was changing and the vehicle drifted north, Kennedy said. The man was found in the vehicle after it was hoisted up to shore, he said.
“We don’t know at this point whether it was an intentional or accidental turn into the water,” Kennedy said.
