Body found in West Hempstead park
A decomposed body was discovered by a fisherman last evening at Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead, state parks police said.
The remains were spotted about 6:30 p.m. in the North Pond, in an area that was "very inaccessible" due to overgrown vegetation, said state parks police Chief Richard O'Donnell.
The pond had been searched this month after Catherine Brady, a homeless woman living in the park, was reported missing.
"It was searched extensively in the last several days with divers, canine, foot searches," O'Donnell said.
He could not say if the body was a man or woman, and no identification was made, pending an autopsy.
Brady, 28, was last seen June 16 and not reported missing by her male companion until July 6, but police said he is not considered a suspect.
Park police and state troopers searched for Brady in an area of the park near North Pond, first on July 6 and 7, and then again during the past few days.
