New York State Park Police said a body was recovered in waters off Tobay Beach, just east of Jones Beach Friday night.

Park police Chief Richard O'Donnell said the body of an as yet unidentified adult male, was found by searchers shortly after 8 p.m.

Witnesses had reported seeing what they believed to be a white male floating off the eastern shore of Jones Beach around 2 p.m. O'Donnell said.

State Park Police with the aid of Nassau County Police Department boat and helicopter units and the U.S. Coast Guard immediately began searching the shore east of parking field 6, without any initial success, he said.

Rough conditions in the water made it difficult to see from above and for boats to get close to the shore, O'Donnell said, but Nassau police made the discovery about six hours later. "We are investigating to see if it's the same person that was observed in the ocean today off Jones Beach," O'Donnell said.
