Burglars broke into a Rockville Centre supermarket by cutting a hole in the roof, then tried to force open two locked safes inside, Nassau County police said.

They were unsuccessful in getting the safes open.

Damage to the two safes, at a Waldbaum's supermarket, was so extensive that detectives suspect that the burglars used power tools, a police spokesman said.

The burglary happened sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday at the Waldbaum's at 399 Ocean Ave., police said.

The break-in was discovered when the manager came to work early Jan. 1, police said.

Police asked anyone with information about what happened to call their hotline: 800-244-TIPS.
