Brooklyn man faces Leandra's Law charge

A Brooklyn man violated Leandra's Law when he drove drunk Saturday on the Southern State Parkway in North Wantagh with a 7-month-old boy as a passenger, State Police said.
Troopers responding to a two-car accident on the Southern State near the Wantagh State Parkway at about 8:41 p.m. interviewed Reynold Charles, 48, the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe, and detected an odor of alcohol, according to a news release.
Charles was arrested on drunken-driving charges and traffic violations, police said.
He also produced a breath-analyzer reading of 0.21 percent, the news release said.
Charles is charged with aggravated DWI, a felony, endangering the welfare of a child and traffic violations.
He was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Nassau and ordered held on a bail of $2,000 bond or $1,000 cash. He is scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday.
Police did not say whether the boy was related to Charles; other family members were in the car as passengers, a State Police spokesman said.
Leandra's Law was passed in 2009 after the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.
