Brooklyn man sentenced in Woodmere slaying
A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for shooting and killing a Woodmere man after a botched robbery attempt, Nassau prosecutors said Tuesday.
Edward Williams, 30, was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on July 21, according to a news release from Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.
Anthony Jackson, 23, of Brooklyn, another defendant, was convicted of felony murder in September and is awaiting sentencing.
Prosecutors said that at about 1:45 a.m. June 15, 2010, Tristan Theodore, 20, arrived with a friend at Theodore's Woodmere home and "were accosted in the driveway by Williams and Jackson."
Williams and Jackson forced the two men into the basement, bound them with duct tape and took cash, car keys and a gaming system, the release said.
The two then forced the victims into Theodore's car. Theodore's friend jumped from the moving car and got away. Williams shot Theodore in the back as he escaped from the car, the release said.
Theodore ran through several yards before collapsing on the back porch of one home. He was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital, where he died.
Williams' defense lawyer, Joseph LoPiccolo of Garden City, said he will appeal. "While not condoning the loss of a life in any way, we believe a second life was wasted by sentencing Mr. Williams to life in prison," LoPiccolo said. With Ann Givens
