Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery in Freeport late Tuesday night that was thwarted when the victim, a taxi driver, sped from the scene.

The attempted robbery occurred on Prince Street at about 11:15 p.m., Nassau County police said.

Police said the taxi driver, who was waiting for a fare, was approached by two men, one of whom stuck his hand inside the cab with a gun and demanded money.

But instead of handing over cash, police said the driver hit the gas pedal. The would-be robbers ran south through parking lots on North Main Street, police said.

No one was injured.

Police said the first man was in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall and slim, and was wearing a light-colored gray hooded sweatshirt with dark jeans. The second man was wearing a brown sweatshirt, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the attempted robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
