Car that hit 3 in New Hyde Park had mechanical issue, cops say

There was a mechanical problem with a car that jumped the curb in North New Hyde Park, then struck and injured three people waiting at a bus stop, Nassau County police said Wednesday.
The 88-year-old driver of the 2009 Toyota Corolla complained of chest pains and was taken to a hospital, police said.
The driver was heading east on Union Turnpike about 5:05 p.m. Tuesday when she “experienced a mechanical issue with her tire, which caused her to leave the roadway and strike three pedestrians waiting at a NICE bus stop in front of 1400 Union Turnpike,” police said in a news release.
A woman, 20, at the bus stop suffered a fractured thigh bone and shattered pelvis, a man, 43, had cuts to the head, and a woman, 63, complained of pain, police said. All were taken to hospitals.
The NICE bus stop shelter was heavily damaged.
Police said there was “no apparent criminality at this time,” adding the car was impounded for brake and safety inspections.
