Cedarhurst man arrested in watch theft

A 21-year-old Cedarhurst man was arrested Thursday and charged with stealing a high-end watch from a parked car last July -- a crime solved, police said, after the owner saw the timepiece for sale on eBay.

Javier Rios, of 118 Cedarhurst Ave., faces a fourth-degree grand larceny charge in connection with the theft, which Nassau County police said took place at about 11:45 p.m. July 16 in the driveway of a house on Elm Street in Woodmere.

Police said it was then that Rios broke into a parked 2006 Nissan and stole a stainless-steel Doxa Sub 300T dive watch valued at $1,100.

Rios then sold the watch to an Inwood secondhand dealer who, police said, then sold it to another dealer. The watch then was listed for sale on eBay, where police said the original owner saw it -- and Fourth Squad detectives tracked it to Manhattan, where it was recovered.

The investigation led back to Rios, police said.

Rios is scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
