City garbage truck hits train in LIC

A sanitation truck backed into a Long Island Rail Road train as the train went through a grade-level crossing whose gates were down Wednesday morning in Long Island City, police said.
No one was injured, a railroad spokesman said.
The accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. at the crossing at Review Avenue, not far from the destination station for the westbound train from Oyster Bay, LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said. The 7:13 a.m. train was scheduled to arrive at Long Island City at 8:34 a.m.
Some of the train's 20 passengers were taken to Long Island City, while others sought their own alternate transportation, Zambuto said.
It was not immediately clear how badly the train was damaged, Zambuto said. Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating.
The railroad operates just two morning rush-hour trains to Long Island City.
The accident did not affect service on the line, which is the western portion of the lower Montauk branch. The route runs through Glendale to Long Island City.
The section of track where the accident occurs borders Newtown Creek and is close to the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.
