A Long Island Rail Road track worker was hospitalized Monday with what a railroad official termed "non-life-threatening injuries" suffered when he came into contact with the electrified third rail in Babylon.

The accident occurred at 10:35 a.m., Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.

The identity of the worker has not been released.

The accident occurred on the tracks near the overpass at Cooper Street, a location that is just east of the Babylon train station and just west of the railroad storage yard. Anders confirmed the accident involved the worker "coming into contact" with the third rail.

But Anders said it was not clear what kind of work the track worker was involved in when the accident occurred.
