Cops: 1 hurt in DWI Meadowbrook crash

State Police said a drunken driver veered out of his lane Sunday on the Meadowbrook Parkway, causing a head-on, two-car crash that critically injured his wife.

Police said two New York State Park Police officers witnessed the 2 p.m. crash in which six were hurt.

A dark-colored Subaru station wagon, driving north on the Meadowbrook north of the Loop Parkway, veered suddenly across the grassy center median and hit an Infiniti sport utility vehicle in the south lanes head-on, according to a news release.

The driver of the Subaru station wagon, George J. Lemus, 30, of Flushing, faces charges of reckless assault, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment, assault and various vehicle and traffic violations, police said. Upgraded charges are possible, "pending further investigation," according to a news release.

His arraignment information was not immediately available.

Lemus' wife, a front-seat passenger, was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow in critical condition, police said. Two of his passengers, his daughter, 13, and his brother, were also taken to Nassau University Medical Center, as were the two occupants of the Infiniti SUV.

The driver of the Infiniti was Lenicolle Estevez of Brooklyn; her passenger was her sister.

State Police did not specify the nature of the other injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
