Cops: 2 arrested in New Cassel attack

Two suspects are under arrest Wednesday -- and a third is being sought -- after police said the trio attacked two men with a baseball bat, knife and machete early Sunday morning in New Cassel.
Jose Hernandez, 17, of 621 Roman Ave., New Cassel, was arrested Wednesday morning in Levittown and charged in connection with the attack, Nassau County police said. Jose Clavel, 19, of 177 Rushmore St., New Cassel, was arrested in Westbury on Tuesday.
Both teens were charged with first-degree and second-degree assault, as well as first-degree gang assault, police said.
Police said Hernandez, Clavel and a third person, who has yet to be arrested, attacked two men, ages 21 and 22, in the yard of a house on Roman Avenue in New Cassel at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday. The attack followed a "previous verbal altercation," according to police.
Police said that one of the victims was knocked to the ground with a baseball bat, while the other was attacked with the machete. The first victim had what police described as "contusions and abrasions," but refused medical attention at the scene.
The second victim was taken to a hospital with injuries described by police as "severe lacerations" to his hand and forearm. He also had a stab wound to the back, police said.
That victim underwent emergency surgery, but his condition was not known.
Hernandez and Clavel were arraigned Wednesday and each held on a bail of $20,000 bond or $10,000 cash. Temporary orders of protection were issued against both men. Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
