Cops: 2 charged with trying to pass fake $100 bills in Levittown

Two men face felony forgery charges after allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills Monday in Levittown, Nassau County police's crimes against property squad said.

Shawn B. Harewood, 25, of West Haven, Conn., and Eric Smith, 19, of 102nd St., Brooklyn, each face three counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument after being arrested Monday.

Harewood had a bag of 20 counterfeit $100 bills, police said, and Smith tried to buy small items - dog food, a greeting card and cupcakes - using fake bills at three different stores on Newbridge Road between 3:15 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.

One of the storekeepers notified police about Smith's purchase attempts, according to a release. Police believe the two men acted "in concert," the release said.

They were scheduled for arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
