Cops: 2 escape after car submerges in canal

A driver and passenger whose car accidentally wound up in a Baldwin canal, submerged in water, managed to escape Sunday night, police said.

Reyna Castillo, 32, of Roosevelt, "apparently accelerated" a 1992 Toyota Camry into the 4 to 5 feet of water at the Milburn Boat Basin at 8:23 p.m., Nassau County police said in a Monday news release.

Castillo and an unidentified 31-year-old male passenger "were able to climb out of the vehicle and were then assisted by the Baldwin Fire Department," which had responded to the scene, police said. There were no injuries.

The Nassau police marine bureau helped remove the car from the water.

Castillo, of 64 Astor Pl., was cited for vehicle, traffic law and parks ordinance violations and is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on April 12, police said.
